Reading Program (Reaching New Heights)

Job Connections    Summer Programming

Reaching New Heights Reading Program

This is an after-school reading program for children in the second through fourth grades who need extra support developing their reading skills. The program is a collaboration with the Perrysburg School District and is coordinated by Diann Toffler, a teacher at Perrysburg Schools.

During the school year, up to 32 children from across the Perrysburg School District are enrolled. Our reading coordinator annually recruits, trains and oversees approximately 30 to 40 volunteers who provide each child with one-on-one intervention, four days per week, throughout the school year.

The program helps with reading, reading comprehension, and homework help in a safe and fun environment. Students show increased reading ability equivalent to at least one academic year, as well tangible enhancements in self-esteem, peer interactions, classroom behaviors, and academic performance.

Please contact the center if interested in volunteering as a mentor for the program.

Job Connections

Job Connections is a program for high school aged students established in collaboration with the Perrysburg School District to ensure that all students gain:

 - independent living skills

 - employment skills to achieve their greatest potential after high school.

The program is carried out at the Perrysburg Heights Community Center, Monday through Thursday.

Students from Perrysburg Schools participate each academic year.

The program provides them with real world experiences such as learning how to prepare meals independently, shopping for daily needs, and learning clerical skills through office training. Ultimately, the program strives to instill confidence in the young adults. The Perrysburg Schools oversee the program.

SUMMER CAMP

Another amazing summer at PHCA filled with laughter, smiles, growth and friendships.

We danced, we sang, we learned about instruments and sports. We got three lessons from MyPlate discussing the importance of a healthy eating and an active lifestyle.

We spread kindness everyday at PHCA over the summer, but spent a whole week talking about the different ways to be kind and the effects of words and actions have on one another.

We were visited by local organizations such as the Girl Scouts, Wood County Hospital, and the Wood County Health Department. Our campers participated in a variety of activities including team building exercises, summer wellness lessons, and career exploration activities.

We also took a trip to the Perrysburg Pool, local shops in downtown Perrysburg, and the planetarium in Bowling Green. We'll finish the summer program with a farewell festival with a lot of fun activities.
